Ryan Helsley
Interviewed By Mike Duffy
Mike Duffy: I was wondering when you go from high school to college, to the minor leagues, what was the biggest challenge when you reach each stage?
Ryan Helsley: The biggest challenge I think going to each level is just maintaining and keeping your self confidence up and trusting that you’re prepared and ready for the next challenge.
Mike Duffy: What is your favorite thing about being a Cardinal?
Ryan Helsley: It’s really hard to pick one favorite thing. This is one of the best organizations in all of baseball from top to bottom. Our fans that we have are second to none so I think having that type of following is really special.
Mike Duffy: What is your favorite hobby besides baseball?
Ryan Helsley: I love to hunt and fish. In the off-season I spend most of my days in a tree stand, running around in the woods, or trying to catch some fish.
Mike Duffy: Who was your favorite baseball player growing up?
Ryan Helsley: I never really had a favorite player because as a kid I never really followed baseball a whole because I was busy playing myself and just being a kid. I just liked baseball.
Mike Duffy: What was your favorite team growing up?
Ryan Helsley: I liked the Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals because they were the closest teams we could follow.
Mike Duffy: What is your favorite stadium?
Ryan Helsley: The coolest stadium I’ve been in is probably Busch stadium. As far as played in I think it’s the Padres AAA stadium in El Paso.
Mike Duffy: What is your favorite Movie? What is your favorite T.V. Show?
Ryan Helsley: I love all the lord of the rings movies and all of the Hobbit movies. Favorite tv show would probably have to be stranger things.
Mike Duffy: Do you have a motto or a thing to do to get you out of a rough time?
Ryan Helsley: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 This is one of my favorite verse and really hits home for me.
Mike Duffy: When did you know you wanted to play professional baseball?
Ryan Helsley: As a kid growing up I would always put “professional baseball player” on the questionnaires you would get growing up. I started to realize it was possible my freshman summer when I played summer ball in Santa Barbara with foresters.
Mike Duffy: What is your favorite baseball memory?
Ryan Helsley: Getting drafted would be pretty high on that list. Also winning the PCL was a really special experience.
Mike Duffy: What is your biggest goal for next season?
Ryan Helsley: To stay healthy, take the ball every 5 games and compete every pitch.
Mike Duffy: Who is your favorite Musician? What is your favorite song?
Ryan Helsley: Depends on what kind of mood I’m in. I like future and I also like George straight.
